Japanese Guitar Research

Well folks, there ain’t much out there regarding researching vintage Japanese guitars from the 1960s.  I’ll be posting quite a bit here over time, so stay tuned!!

The Japanese Brand Name Game is the page that will never end!!  This is a list of badges and names found on Japanese guitars of the 50s and 60s, with some of those sneaky 70s era badges thrown in.

  • Here’s an old Domino page, some good info here.
  • Here’s Nate DeMont’s Guyatone site!
  • The GREAT Bill Menting has some wonderful vintage Ibanez info here.
  • Some information about Kent guitars, going more in depth here.
  • Speaking of Kent guitars, here’s a guy who REALLY digs the late 60s Kent 820 model.
  • Here’s the well done Matsumoku site.  Mostly 70s stuff though.
  • Teisco Twangers!!  You’ve probably been here before!  Not everything is accurate, but it’s still the best resource out there for Teisco.
  • Here’s a little bit about Telestar guitars.
  • The Univox page!!  Love it!
  • Here’s a Ventura page.

  1. Hi I have a silvertone 1437S which was the same as a WG4L, this one is very special . My Dad worked at Sears at the time and bought this the minute it came in , then they dropped it because according to dad it was a prototype to see if sales would be good on it and it wasnt because evidently people didnt want to pay 100.00 more for a stereo guitar when the regular 1437 was good enough , people had no idea what a stereo guitar was even for. To my knowledge there was like 5 made and they were prototypes only , I have one , Where the normal WG4L had 4 switches and up was off and down was on for each pickup, these worked with up was on for any pickup through one jack and down was on for any pickup through the other jack and it has 2 volume and 2 tone controls. Id have to say this one would probably kick the spectrum 5′s ass for rarity although I have one of those also and theres no match , I don’t think Id take 10 grand for it. Its a pearl white one. Cool site
